| Since Hurricane Wilma in October 2005, and the subsequent disruption in the real estate market that followed, neighborhood issues have been relatively quiescent. Most homeowners feel that for the most part we have a relatively good City Commission. THERE ARE, HOWEVER, SOME DISTURBING STORM CLOUDS ON THE HORIZON For more info Click Here |
| A SALUTE TO THOSE WHO CARRIED THE LOAD A well known refrain in the urban planning and zoning business goes, "The opposition, (tree-huggers, activists, call them what you may) do not have the advantage of a full-time organization or the resources to press their viewpoints over a sustained period of time. People get old, people get tired, they get sick, give up, move away, and they lose interest. So all that you have to do is be patient and eventually you will get what you want. It's just a matter of time. Key West has had a corps of intelligent, involved, and public spirited retired people who have provided an anchor of common sense and hard work since the 1960's. If you've been here any length of time, you will remember their names. You won't see them in today's media. Among their accomplishments have been the preservation of the Historic District and the development of the Comprehensive Plan. Looking back at some of the individuals who have done much for our community, the approximate time range of their effective activity was ten to fifteen years. As the current "crop" ages, retires, or just fades away, we have to ask: will there be a new generation coming in to fill the roles of those who have gone before? Will we continue to have an active group of informed retirees, and a few organizations with the financial support to continue the important work of holding the line on gradual erosion of quality of life here in the Florida Keys? Could you possibly be one of these individuals? There is strength in numbers. It's important to join and support groups like Last Stand. And it's a good idea to stay informed, even if we have to learn to "read between the lines" at times. We salute those who are continuing to carry the load. What we have is too precious to lose. It's not a task that is often rewarded publicly. But it's a great public service in the best tradition of our country. So, Thank You! |
